I chose to work as an external collaborator not simply for the autonomy the role can offer. The main reason is different: this is the way of working that allows me to be most useful.
What I find rewarding is not merely receiving a task, completing it, and delivering the result. I prefer to join a project early enough to understand its goals, constraints, and actual problems; propose a solution; follow its development; and remain available when the time comes to maintain or improve it.
To me, a collaboration becomes valuable when it continues beyond delivery. I enjoy seeing an idea take shape, learning how it is used, and helping it become more solid over time. That continuity is what lets me understand the real effect of my work.
An external collaborator is sometimes seen as a distant figure: receive a brief, complete the work, and move on. That model exists, but it is not the relationship I am looking for. Even as an external partner, I want to take responsibility for understanding what is needed, question a decision when necessary, and give the project the same care I would give my own work.
This approach also brings me into contact with different organizations. Every collaboration introduces new requirements, methods, and constraints. The variety helps me grow, but I do not want it to become superficiality. I would rather follow fewer projects, understand them properly, and build relationships based on trust, clarity, and shared responsibility.
I do not consider full-time employment a lesser model. It can provide continuity, deep product knowledge, and a strong sense of belonging. My choice is therefore not a universal judgment, but a preference for the conditions in which I work best: contributing to different environments without giving up involvement or long-term responsibility.
Independence still matters, but it would not be enough on its own. What I value most is the opportunity to make a useful contribution, remain accountable for the consequences of my decisions, and watch a project mature over time.
More than freedom itself, that is why I chose to work as an external collaborator.
